Shandong Yantai Pipe Network Water Quality Monitoring Project

Project Background
Given the extensive and highly complex underground pipe networks, conventional manual inspection and periodic sampling suffer from time‑lag issues, making real‑time tracking of dynamic water‑quality variations and facility operating conditions difficult. Accordingly, building an intelligent pipe‑network monitoring system integrating water‑quality monitoring, flow surveillance and facility safety early‑warning based on IoT technology has become an urgent requirement to improve water‑affairs management efficiency and safeguard urban water security in Yantai City.

Solution Overview
Real‑time Multi‑parameter Water Quality Monitoring
Deploy Model 1105F multi‑parameter water‑quality monitors at key pipe‑network nodes and discharge outlets. Housed in stainless‑steel waterproof enclosures and equipped with 7‑inch smart displays, the devices conduct real‑time online measurement of core indicators including COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen. The system supports historical data storage and over‑limit alarm functions. Alerts will be instantly pushed to the management platform whenever water‑quality parameters deviate from safety thresholds.
Precise Flow and Velocity Surveillance
Doppler flowmeters are adopted to cope with contaminated fluids and partially‑filled pipe flow commonly encountered in pipe networks. Based on the Doppler effect, the meters transmit ultrasonic signals and receive echoes reflected by suspended particles or air bubbles within the fluid to accurately calculate flow velocity and volumetric flow rate. Featuring non‑contact installation and zero moving parts, the instruments maintain high measuring accuracy with low maintenance requirements even under harsh pipe‑network conditions, delivering reliable datasets for pipe‑network hydraulic modeling.
Safety Protection via Smart Manhole Covers
Smart manhole‑cover alarm terminals are installed inside pipe‑network inspection wells. Integrated with tilt, displacement and water‑immersion sensors and powered by LPWAN (Low‑Power Wide‑Area Network) technology, the terminals continuously monitor manhole‑cover turnover, abnormal opening and underground water overflow. Empowered by advanced trajectory‑analysis algorithms, the system effectively filters false alarms triggered by vehicle‑induced vibration, and delivers second‑level response and precise positioning for abnormal events.

Project Significance
Consolidate the defence line for urban water‑quality safety
Supported by 24‑hour non‑stop monitoring of key indicators such as COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen, administrative authorities can detect water‑quality anomalies or illegal discharge and leakage at the earliest stage, and trigger emergency response plans promptly. This prevents polluted water from entering water‑supply pipe networks or discharging into natural water bodies, and effectively guarantees drinking‑water safety for Yantai residents as well as ecological safety of coastal waters.
Improve refined operation of pipe networks
Accurate velocity and flow data output by Doppler flowmeters, combined with facility status feedback from smart manhole‑covers, enable water‑utility enterprises to obtain full visibility over pipe‑network operating conditions. This not only cuts pipe‑network leakage rates and optimizes water‑supply dispatching, but also provides early warnings against underground overflow risks during flood seasons or extreme weather, mitigating urban waterlogging hazards.
Accelerate digital transformation of water‑affairs management
The project transforms the traditional “passive emergency‑repair” mode into “proactive early‑warning” and “intelligent decision‑making”. Through correlative data analysis, unified management of pipe‑network assets, water quality and flow is realized on one single platform. Manual inspection costs are substantially reduced, laying a solid foundation for Yantai to establish a modernized and intelligent urban water‑affairs management system.
